First, I have to tell you about the birdie we found. The little guy fell from his nest, which was located at the top of a ceiling light. It reminded me of the book by P.D. Eastman, Are you my mother?. It's a story of a little bird who fell out of his nest and went looking to find his mother. It's my favorite kids book. Anyway, we found this birdie and he was still alive. He couldn't have been more than a week old as his wings just had a little fur on them. The decision was made to try to put him back in his nest. Unfortunately during the decision process the little guy was left in the sun and he quickly died. It was very sad. I tried to dispose of him, but Sam petitioned to have him taken home, to our home. With birdie in a shoe box, we took him home and performed our first ever pet funeral. Sam dug a little hole, gathered flowers and then we said a prayer for birdie. It's kind of cool that the kids have a heart after Jesus' as even Jesus cared about the sparrows.
The weekend started with sunny skies and a sunny 3 day forecast! That's been pretty rare arou
nd here lately as it's been raining almost every day for a couple of months now. (I'm lovin' it!) So we packed up the motorhome, wisked Balin away from his work and headed down the road with Grandma & Grandpa. Our destination: LoLoMai at Paige Springs. I love going to LoLoMai to camp as it feels like you're in the middle of an oasis. They are located right on the edges of Oak Creek Canyon and on top of a natural occuring spring so the vegetation is lush and green, green, green. After a 1.5 hour road trip (perfect for toddlers) we arrived, found our campsite and promptly made dinner. Grandma up the street made big points with Sam as she had bought him a Spider Man fishing pole and net set. He was so excited that moments after the last bite of dinner was had he was ready to go fishing. Being that it was still 90 degrees out, I too was ready to go to the river, though I wanted to go swimming. Unfortunately they closed the creek to swimming as the floods brought brown water and unhealthy bacteria. Bummer.

The next day we spent playing, riding bikes, taking walks, running from the mean geese and swimming in the swimming pool. Balin's attention was dominated by Sam, they did everything together. Balin and I were able to steal away a couple of times to see the local plant nursery and to try some of the local wines. Our camping neighbors were from Hamburg, Germany and so we introduced them to the art of smore making. The Schuelers were traveling around the southwest and California in a rented RV for 4 weeks. Their son Tim (17), daughter Katia (13) were really enjoyable to be around so we invited them back to Prescott for dinner and a free place to stay. (We threw away our inflatable bed so they had to stay in their RV) It was great to discuss politics, religion, business, social problems/solutions with people from a different country and in many ways a different culture.
Sunday we made it home after taking a detour in Jerome for a coffee break. Jerome is a quaint, though funky, little mining town literally perched on the side of a mountain halfway between Prescott and Sedona. It's known for it's art community, great restaurants and amazing views. It's a beautiful drive from both Sedona and Prescott as it goes through red rock and pine forests. Once home we cleaned up, took naps and prepared ourselves for the first meeting of our small group from church. All together there were 10 adults, 12 kids and 3 babysitters. We had a wonderful time getting to know the other couples, none of which we knew previously, and their children. Our topic for the first portion of our small group is a book called. Sheparding a Child's Heart by Ted Tripp. The book is about how to speak to the heart of your child as we believe the things our children do and say flows from the heart. We're all looking forward to seeing how we grow as people and parents.
