Halloween 09

Last night was just perfect. The kids woke up from their 2 hour naps happy and ready to go trick or treating. Our first stop was Grandma and Grandpa up the streets house, which is always a great treat. Dad was more excited than the kids I think, as he always likes to present them with a offer that makes them ponder. He buys the giant candy bars, a bag of candy corns and then puts out a $20 bill. The kids have to choose only one item...and at this age they choose the candy. Of course then there is an explanation that the money could buy them 20 chocolate bars and they try to change their minds. Dad ends up giving the kids the money anyhow so the kids are happy all around with the exchange.
After the Grandparents house we headed into town to Mt. Vernon street. It's a unique street in our town that has historic houses that have mostly been restored. Most residents decorate for Halloween and then hand out candy. The police actually close off the street for the thousands of trick-or-treaters that mill around. We were there early, about 4:30, and the place was happening. Most of the kids were young and it was fun to see all the costumes. We also saw a ton of friends, some we see daily and others I haven't seen in years. It was fun and it was definitely something that happens only in a small town.
After Mt. Vernon we continued up the hill to our friends the Hammon's house. We had a delightful time hanging out, drinking wine and chatting. Their daughter Kate and her friend Hanna were there for dinner as well as Hanna's sister and our "nanny" Kaile. It was good to relax and talk about life and our dreams. The kids were great and they were happy to play with the dogs, eat candy and play with the plethera of toys Mrs. Hamman had downstairs. We got home around 9:45pm and unfortunately the kids, Perrin in particular, was up around 6:15am. Balin woke up, or rather didn't wake up, and was sick this morning. He thinks that he's coming down with what I had. Bummer. He's currently laying in bed reading a new book he got so I don't think he's that sick. At least the weather's beautiful, the kids are fed and I've got a few things to do today myself. Ahhhh.....
