Happy New Year 2011

We got about 2 feet of snow at our house last week!  Balin was expected to drive home from San Diego the day the snow started falling.  And fall it did.  It kept coming all day and night and the following day.  I tried to keep up on the shoveling but then just had to succumb to the fact that there was a lot of snow!

Balin made it home safe and the next day we just stayed home playing games, eating food, drinking "warm" drinks and really enjoying ourselves.  We had plenty of firewood to keep the hearth warm and the atmosphere cozy.  It just kept snowing.  New Year's Eve it finally stopped snowing and we were able to get Balin's truck out of the driveway and onto the icy streets.  The kids were off playing at the neighbors' houses and so we headed into our favorite coffee shop with good books and enjoyed ourselves.  That night Perrin and I went to a wedding of one of her previous babysitters and got home before the clock struck midnight. (It was more like 7pm)  Balin and I got the kids safely to bed and then we snuggled down and watched the remaining episodes of Lie to Me (if you haven't seen it...you are missing out!)  Of course we didn't make it to midnight, but we didn't really care.

New Year's Day was almost as lovely as the Eve.  The kids rotated in and out of the house all morning and afternoon - sledding, playing with friends, playing by themselves, watching a movie.  We gave our friends the Hammans a call and offered to bring pizza and salad over.  Christie jumped on the idea of not having to cook, as that's all she had been doing for the last 14 days.  She also had hosted the entire bridal party at her house and vacation rentals - 10 bridesmaids.  Crazy, gracious, lovely lady.

We cooked the pizzas, drank an amazing Zinfandel all the while the kids slid down the perfect hill next to her house.  It was a great day and evening!

Tonight I write as the kids are sleeping, classical music is playing, the fire is crackling and the candles are flickering.  And Stanley is upstairs trying to make himself a nest out of the carpet...nice sound.  The kids are off to school tomorrow - with both gladness and sadness.  We've all enjoyed the break and in some ways wish it didn't have to end.  But, we only have 4 days until another long weekend. It's a great life.
