Saturday was a long day for we Stricklers. We decided to skip the last day of ski school at Schweitzer as it was rainy and yucky on the mountain. I'm not as tough as I used to be and I don't really like to ski in yucky weather.
It turned out to be quite the busy day, which is not a-typical to our lives. Backing up a bit, we had commitments the previous Thursday & Friday evenings that brought us home late and we were really looking forward to a quiet weekend.
The day started out with Balin and a couple of buddies, including Yogi, going on their semi-weekly run through the woods at 7am. Balin invited the guys in for a cup of coffee and this is where we learned about the Father Daughter dance that was occurring that evening. Perrin's teacher Mr. Williams, who runs with Balin, said it would be a bunch of fun and that he was bringing his two girls. Balin was noncommittal but I knew Perrin would absolutely love a big date night with dad.
When Perrin came up for breakfast, I asked her if she would be interested in going and she jumped up and down with excitement as another friend from school was going to be attending. The prospect of a date night with date meant that we girls needed to go on a quick shopping trip to find the perfect dress for the evening. Oh and don't forget the shoes.
Perrin and I promptly ate and headed off to Kohl's to see if they had any dresses that would fit the bill. We found two. And the shoes.
On the way home I dropped Perrin off at Mr. Williams' house so she could play with her friend Davy and headed home to get dressed for the rest of the day.
Sad to say, our dear friends and director of Young Life here in Spokane Valley lost their baby after he was born. They were holding the funeral/memorial on Saturday and we needed to go. It was so sad. I can't imagine the heart ache they're continuing to feel. My heart and prayers continue to go out to Jessi and Ryan.
After the memorial, we stopped by the hospital where a friend was recovering from a major appendectomy. She was lucky to have survived. Her story is amazing this friend. She's 56, has 2 or 3 grown children and was leading a happy life in the San Diego area when she found out on Facebook (true story) that her brother had been murdered; by his wife. They have 2 young children, Samantha (age 6) and Charlie (age 4) who had been present during the scene. So sad. This friend immediately swooped in and took those kids into her home, rearranged her entire life to care for these little people, all the while mourning the loss of her brother. Crazy.
So her work isn't done. She's got Charlie and Sam to raise and love on still. It was nice to encourage her and lift her spirits for that time in the hospital.
When we got home, we took a nap, and then got ready for the evening. Perrin was so excited to have a "big night" out with her dad she could hardly wait. Balin, to his credit, rallied as he really hadn't wanted to go. Seeing the look on his daughter's face and the excitement that was oozing out of her became excited also. They headed out to dinner at a nearby restaurant and then made their way to the dance. From Perrin's perspective it was pretty much the perfect date. She danced with her dad, danced with her friends, ate candy, bought raffle tickets. She wasn't even disappointed she said that she didn't win anything, the evening was just perfect with her dad. Pretty cool night.
